Smart Meters are electric and gas meter reading devices. They are being installed with purpose of creating national smart grid. In order to enhance energy efficiency, Smart Meters are constructed as radio transmitters that communicate data from homes and businesses to the gas and electric company through a matrix of radio signals. People and utility companies can measure and monitor the energy consumption at any time of the day.

Studies show indication that radio frequency (RF) Smart Meters emit is harmful to human health. There has been reported many cases of  concentration and memory problems, dizziness, heart palpitations, headaches, sleep disruptions, nausea, anxiety and behavioral problems in children. Children, same as with any case of EMF radiation, are especially vulnerable because they absorb greater rates of radiation than adults. Other risky categories are electrosensitive people, people with  pacemakers and chronically ill people whose immune systems are compromised.

Gas and electric companies are apparently unable to give consistent, believable answers about how frequently smart meter radiation is emitted-or what the peak power is of the radiation signal at certain distances. Some representative say the meters transmit RF six times a day; others, once an hour. Independent RF specialists have measured them every 45 seconds, or even twice in a minute.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has also studied the effects of Emf on human health. Their updated results are that, among other things, RF can significantly increase the risk of a glioma, a deadly brain tumor.

There are no official warning signs about health risks that come with a Smart Meter. But it seems advisable, that if you have been suffering from any unexplainable ailments since the installation of your Smart Meter, you might want to look into finding EMF protection against the RF emitted by the meter.

New Report Calling For Tougher Standards To Regulate Cellular Technologies

Environment and Human Health, Inc. (EHHI) released a new report calling for tougher standards in order to regulate cellular technologies. Special emphasize was given to use of cellphones by children and pregnant women.
By reviewing hundreds of studies that have examined the potential health threats associated with cellular device use, EHHI announced there is a need for stricter standards in cellphone regulation.

Leading author of the report stated that scientific evidence is sufficiently robust showing that cellular devices pose significant health risks to children and pregnant women. The weight of the evidence supports stronger precautionary regulation by the federal government. The cellular industry should take immediate steps to reduce emission of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) from phones and avoid marketing their products to children.

Another coauthor of the report stated that the human brain is especially susceptible to numerous environmental insults that can produce irreversible damage during critical periods of nervous system development between conception and full maturity. A number of peer-reviewed studies reported changes in the nervous systems of rats, mice and humans following exposure to cell phone radiation. These include diminished learning, diminished reaction time, decreased motor function, reduced memory accuracy, hyperactivity and diminished cognition.

EHHI is warning that Cell phones have enjoyed exceptional freedom from government oversight and control to protect against health and environmental hazards before cell phone devices are marketed. There are no enforceable standards to limit human exposure to cell phone radiation. While the U.S. does not require any regulations to restrict advertising or warnings against use of cellular devices by pregnant women or children, many other nations do.

Report mentions that most cellphone users are unaware that new phones include warnings about the need to hold devices on a safe distance from the body, approximately five-eighths to one inch. Intensity of exposure falls exponentially as distance between the phone and body increases so therefore users can limit their exposure dramatically by using speakerphones or headsets.

Also, cellphones can create feelings of psychological dependency. There have been common effects reported in the literature and include distraction, isolation, hyperactivity, inability to focus on complex and long term tasks, and a heightened sense of anxiety.

Another serious concern of EHHI report’s authors is recycling of cell phones. In 2012 almost 220 million of cellphones will be discarded in the U.S., with fewer than 10 percent of these being recycled. This waste is especially hazardous when burned because of the release of dioxins from some plastic polymers, and diverse metals that do not break down.

EHHI summarizes that the government must take greater responsibility for testing cellular technologies before they are marketed to assure their safety, their proper disposal and to educate the public about safe patterns of use.

- Did you know that cellphones have been exempted from having to meet specific safety compliance prior to consumer use. The only other product ever issued the same exemption was – cigarettes.
- Largest studies conducted on cellphone radiation impact on human health are funded by phone industry itself. The reason for this is that most governments have not made available funds for independent research. This means that self-regulated cellphone industry controls most important research, outcomes of those research, when and what of those results are to be published publicly.
- Microwave ovens and cellphones have one thing in common – they both operate using micro-waves. Microwave ovens use high power so heating of the human tissue can be detected; cell phones use low power and therefore heat may or may not be detected, although it is still undoubtedly there. The frightening fact is that human brain has no pain receptors to give any warning of pain or damage while your phone is being tightly pressed against your head, day after day.
- Many studies indicate that brain cancers are linked to cellphone use. However, contrary to popular belief, those are not the only diseases found to be linked to cell phone use. Based on the evidence of 100s of documented, duplicated, published and peer-reviewed scientific data from the global research efforts, world renowned scientists, biophysicists, epidemiologists and even industry-hired experts, over 50 adverse health effects have been linked to exposure. Some of those are nervous system abnormalities (such as headaches, memory loss, fatigue, concentration difficulties) but also other abnormalities as well such as impotence and erectile dysfunction, reduction in sperm count and sperm quality which leads to problems of infertility.
- Research has also indicated that long term use of cellphones (long term exposure to microwave radiation) might be even more harmful than adverse hazardous effects of smoking.

Cell phone is a great invention that keeps improving. Cell phones have become useful and advanced tools for most of the people on this planet. Cell phone companies are good and they are essentially doing what they are suppose to do – making money. The reason for so many contradicting facts regarding cellphone radiation and it’s impact on human health is that that cellphone industry is responsible for lots of information we hear about it. That is clearly a conflict of interest. Cell phone industry does not have vested interest in discovering what are the dangers of cell phone use. Even they put the warnings about microwave radiation in cell phone manuals. So caution is advisable. Use precautionary measures or/and cellphone protection products and EMF protection products. Cell Phones – Health Time Bomb

According to experts, cellphones are becoming “health time bomb”. More than 200 academic studies link use of the devices with serious health conditions such as brain tumours, according to a group of leading scientists who are arguing ministers to warn the public. Their report states that EMF radiation represents potentially ‘enormous’ health risk – especially for children, whose smaller, thinner skulls are more susceptible to radiation. It accuses officials of ‘downplaying uncertainty’ over safety, adding: ‘This was the kind of wishful thinking that cost lives with tobacco and asbestos’.
The authors point to several studies linking long-term cell phone use to development of a rare brain tumour called a glioma, a low sperm counts, behavioural problems in children whose mothers used them during pregnancy, and damage to brain cells. One of the authors, consultant neurosurgeon Kevin O’Neill, said the latency period for brain tumours is 30 years so it is possible the consequences of phone use are not yet apparent. Another one, Professor Denis Henshaw, emeritus professor of human radiation effects at Bristol University, advocates cigarette-style warnings on mobile phone packets.
A new Greek scientific study has demonstrated how frequency electromagnetic fields, namely cell phones, portable phones, WiFi, and wireless computer equipment, alter important protein changes in the brains of animals. Important areas of the brain such as the hippocampus, cerebellum, and frontal lobe are regions responsible for learning, memory, and other functions. These areas are negatively impacted by microwave radiation, even at levels below the safety guidelines put in place by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation protection. A total of 3 hours of cell phone exposure were simulated over the 8 month time period, and the results showed that many neural function related proteins’ functional relationship changed for worse.
Another study conducted by a Russian team of researchers also showed that EMF and cell phones cause significant long-term cognitive decline in children. It may be time for parents to re-evaluate if young children should really be using these devices having in mind their growing bodies and developing brains.
At this point, a number of countries are attempting to adopt precautionary protocols to limit cell phone use in an attempt to mitigate the number of adverse effects they have on human health. In 2011, the WHO/IARC released a report stating that cell phone radiation may have a carcinogenic effect on humans. In fact, the World Health Organization actually said that cell phones are in the same cancer-causing category as lead, engine exhaust, and chloroform.
Exposure to electromagnetic frequencies is the result of our advancing technologies, but it is important to study these effects so people know exactly what they’re dealing with in order to take the necessary precautionary measures or/and to implement EMF protection.

Generation Cell Phone

For many years scientific studies showing dangerous sides of cellphone radiation haven’t had enough public attention. Finally, in March 2011 World Health Organization (WHO) classified cellphone radiation as “possibly carcinogenic”, based on research of increased risks of glioma (a malignant type of brain cancer associated with wireless phone use), salivary gland tumors and acoustic neuromas, tumors of the nerve that links the ear to the brain.
Thereby, cellphone radiation got into the same category of health hazards such as DDT and gas exhaust. Confusingly enough, according to WHO, pickles and coffee also belong to this category. Most scientist will agree we will need many more years of various test in order to completely understand true impact of cellphone to human health. In the meantime – they advise caution. But unlike DDT and gas exhaust, cellphone radiation has a additional, very special dangerous side – since we cannot see, hear or smell it unless we have EMF radiation detector, most people tend to neglect it’s presence. And with every day, that presence, together with all it’s risks, is alarmingly increasing.
The danger is very real. For example, during last 20 years, brain tumor rates increased 40%. Replacing Leukemia, brain tumors became the leading cause of death among children. At this moment, statistics show 75% of US teenagers are using cellphones, which is 45% higher than in 2004. This generation of children will be the first generation of humans experiencing EMF pollution throughout their whole lives, and let’s not forget another scientific fact – EMF radiation effects to human health are cumulative.

Should we be alarmed? The answer is yes, alarmed and very cautious. While awaiting for greater transparency in cell phone radiation exposure to consumers which will help in raising EMF radiation awareness and hopefully bring better law regulations regarding cellphone industry, there are things everyone of us should practice to decrease individual exposure:

1. Encourage access to regular phone. This will help decrease time spent on communication via cellphone.
2. Keep cellphones away from your bodies. Day or night, the further your cellphone is from your body – the better.
3. Before making a call, unless it’s a case of real urgency, always look at signal bars on your cellphone first. If the signal is weak, it’s better to avoid making a call since your cellphone will emit more EMF to maintain the signal.
4. Use EMF protection devices.
5. Text more, call less. Although cellphones also emit EMF while texting it is significantly weaker and will produce a much lower exposure to EMF radiation comparatively to when cellphones are closer to head

Why Our Society Needs EMF Protection

Public concern with the presence of dangerous levels of EMF radiation in residential areas is growing.
With ever increasing density of housing units and EMF sources such as electrical transmission lines, cellphone towers, TVs, computers, wireless networks, the EMF radiation levels people come in contact with everyday are rapidly growing. That is concerning, especially if we add enormously growing use of cellphones and wireless computers.
Although the subject brings a lot of controversy, there is accumulating evidence supporting connection between cellphones and brain tumors.
For example, Swedish research institute in 2004 published report claiming that a decade or more of cellphone use can cause tumor growth. Three years later,Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel) issued a stunning statement that as little as 10 minutes of using a mobile phone could trigger changes in the brain that are associated with cancer by interfering with the way brain cells divide.
Children are especially vulnerable to EMF radiation, due to their undeveloped bodies and thinner skulls containing more fluids than an adult. The bone marrow of a child’s head absorbs 10 times more radiation than an adult, while those of infants and toddlers will absorb even more.
Studies have also shown that cellphone radiation exposed human sperm die three times faster and it’s DNA becomes significantly more deformed .
So, what can you do to protect yourself from EMF radiation emitted from gadgets that cannot be avoided in modern living?

- Remember – distance is your friend. Don’t keep your phones in your pockets or on a belt.
- Pregnant women should keep their cellphones away from their abdomen.
- Don’t allow your children to play with phones, or use them.
- When talking on a cellphone, use a headset or a handset whenever possible.
- If using the phone without a headset, wait for the call to connect before placing the phone next to the ear.
- Use EMF protection products. There are advanced EMF technologies available nowadays that strengthen your bioenergy field and immune system against the effects of EMF.
- Avoid use of cellphone in enclosed metal spaces (i.e.vehicles or elevators) where devices may use more power to establish connection. The metal enclosure also acts as a Faraday cage that traps the radiation and reflects it back onto the occupants.
- Purchase a phone with a low SAR (Specific Absorption Rate).

More and more new important studies point toward cellphone radiation being a very serious health hazard.

Although previous studies showed that cellphones are safe, today many believe those studies were premature.

All cell phones emit some amount of electromagnetic radiation.

There are two types of electromagnetic radiation: Ionizing radiation (such as Gamma rays and X-rays) and Non-ionizing radiation ( such as radio-frequency energy, visible light and microwave radiation).

Cellphones emit non-ionizing radiation, which is usually considered safe but there are some serious concerns on their long term effect on health. Non ionizing radiation (Radio Frequency Energy) has the ability to heat human tissue, much like the way microwave ovens heat food. At this point, cellphone radiation has been potentially linked with numerous serious  illnesses and changes in human tissue: cancer, brain tumors, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, fatigue, headaches, significant increases in brain glucose, changed synaptic transmission in the nervous system.

Considering the fact that there are more than 4.3 billion cellphone users worldwide and that great number of those are children who’s bodies absorb double the cellphone radiation as adults, long term effects of cellphone radiation to human health are yet to be seen on large scale.

Here are some tips on EMF protection and on what you can do to decrease cellphone or any other EMF radiation that you are exposed to on daily basis:

Smart Meters and Freedom of Choice

Whom ever I talk to these days about Smart Meters the issue of EMF protection comes up. The second issue is that we do not  have a choice.

Utilities companies in USA, Canada, Europe etc. have started implementing their plans of replacing all analog electric meters with the smart meters. The decision was made without any significant public consultation. Do we users have a choice? Cell phones are at least not mandatory. We users have a choice to decide if and what kind of cell phones we will use. When it comes to smart meters tho choice is to accept it  or to live of the grid. It should not be so.

Smart meters operate on the similar frequency to cell phones. This year the World Health Organization has classified cell phone frequency radiation  as carcinogenic (read here). In few years they might do the same with the smart meters. By then it will be too late. Smart meters will be part of most of the households in the western world.

The radiation exposure from the Smart Meters is constant. You can not switch them off and they are close to our homes where we and our children sleep, eat etc. How can we not have a choice?

The claims of the safety of Smart Meters are based on limited science and knowledge similar to the cell phones. As we know the debate about possible dangers of cell phones is still on. The one about Smart Meters is just starting. The scientific community is as usually divided. One of the world known scientist from Sweden – Dr. Johanson was compelled to write a letter to California Public Utility Commission putting his weight behind the claims of the Smart Meters health risks. With more frequencies being used, with the levels of radiation increasing, and with so little research on the long-term, low-level effects of this technology we are creating a potential time bomb. In California big number of municipalities have banned Smart Meters or enacted resolution agains smart meters. In the landmark case in Maine Maine Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) found that it was an unjust and unreasonable practice for Central Maine Power Company (CMP) to refuse to permit residential and small commercial customers to opt-out of CMP’s smart meter program.

That is what we all should have, a choice to accept or opt out. Considering possible future health consequences smart meters should be a matter of choice not a mandatory decision made by our public utilities.
