Today, more and more schools are deciding to introduce tablet PCs to their students. When compared to regular computers, tablet PCs are portable, practical and simpler to use. It makes studying easier, more fun and it is a good example of how technology can serve a good purpose of making our lives more comfortable and our time more productive. But, what are other aspects of introducing this technology into schools?
Tablet PCs are connected to internet only through wireless technology. There is usually no possibility of using an adapter to avoid wireless networking.
The fact that World Health Organization has declared EMF radiation as possible carcinogen (right next to DDT, lead and engine exhaust) along with various scientific studies linking man made electromagnetic waves to many diseases and health problems, a wide introduction of wireless technology to schools raises many concerns. Children’s yet fully undeveloped bodies make them far more vulnerable to EMFs compared to adults. Bioinitiative Report states that current SAR levels are obsolete; they need to be updated with new research results and take into account that safe SAR levels for an adult are not the same as for children. Having in mind that EMF field is always highest closest to the EMF source, many parents are also concerned if tablet PCs will increase level of exposure for their kids since usually tablets are held closer to the body than regular computers.
Wi-Fi technology emits more EMF waves than wired one and it can be easily measured. Wireless routers and wireless computers emit radio frequency microwave radiation and they both send it intensely back and forth through the air. These waves penetrate human bodies and disturb natural electromagnetic fields of human cells. Consequences vary, depending on many factors, and although we still don’t fully understand them, many will agree that precaution is advised. It’s easy to see that introduction of tablet PCs could make classrooms swamped with EMF radiation. Studies showed that some milder health problems such as unexplained headaches, fatigue, lack of concentration and inability to sleep have disappeared after people who were suffering from them simply removed wireless technology from their homes, switching from wireless internet and phones to the wired ones.
There are other ways students can be provided with technology they need in order to learn but at the same time eliminating EMF radiation from the classrooms. If tablet PCs are to be introduced into schools, should the schools also introduce precautionary measures and what would those measures be? Should the radiation be measured, monitored and should parents have access to this information. Who will make sure that radiation levels in classrooms do not exceed safe levels? Parents point out that these are some of the questions that must be addressed prior to introduction of strong EMF sources into schools.
